This week we reached our initial funding goal at Beacon Reader. I am deeply grateful to all of you who so generously supported this project.
When I decided to start drawing Sleeper Ave., it was with the knowledge that I would have to stop drawing my nationally syndicated comic strip, Freshly Squeezed, and that I would lose that income, but at this stage in my life and my career I didn’t want to delay telling these stories any longer. Both my children, Gabe and Tasha, have urged me for years to take on this project, and it was time. Plus, I wanted to see if an old cartoonist could learn new media. That’s still a work in progress, but, with lots of help from my much more internet savvy son, I’m making some headway.
Your willingness to help underwrite Sleeper Ave. confirms that I made the right decision.
The next step is to keep building an audience for my work. I know I’ve asked a lot of you, and you’ve come through spectacularly, but I have one more request. Spread the word. Let your family, your friends (including your Facebook friends), your acquaintances know about Sleeper Ave.
And I’ll have one more reason to say thank you. I’m getting good at it.
